Geography Unit: Midwest America
VA SOL NAG 5.5d The student will explore the Midwest region of the United States by describing the population of the Midwest including: early settlement, historically significant events and places, and cultural characteristics
Lesson 5: Historically Signficant Events and Places of the Midwest **Note: This is a 4 Day Lesson**
Objective: Students will be able to explain the following:
Historically Significant Events and Places
Louisiana Purchase (1803)
Lewis and Clark Expedition (1804-1806)
Homestead Act of 1862
Transcontinental Railroad completed (1869)
Materials: Textbooks, Library, Smartboard, Laptops, Posterboard, Markers, Maps, Scissors, Glue
Preassessment: Survey of what is know of the 4 previously mentioned places: Thumbs up means know about it, thumbs side means heard of it but do not know much, thumbs down means never heard of it.
Procedures
Link - Introduce each historical event and give a brief overview. Also introduce PBS as a resource to find information about these events to include pictures, videos and documents.
Instruction
Hand out Tic Tac Toe Choice Boards to students and have them choose which "row" they would like to do. Conference with each student about their choices, their time management for completing their choices and how they will display their final products.
TicTacToe Choice Board includes learning for all intelligences, as well as the use of photography, journal, artwork, books and other primary and secondary sources - with a choice to dramatize an event from that time. See choice board
Students will have class time to use resources within the classroom to research, and students may research in groups depending on amount of supplies. They may also work on any research outside of class, at home or during free time.
Closing
Each day students will write in their SS notebooks a brief summary of their findings and their progress.
On the final day, students will present their favorite choice to the class.
Extension

Assessment
Observational: Teacher will conference with student about their choices and follow up on their progress day by day to ensure completion of the assignments
Formal Concrete: Students will present one of their choices and turn in their other three, assessment will be given on terms of completion and thoroughness.

By Content: Tic Tac Toe Choice Boards for specific events from each historical event
By Process: Research for information on Tic Tac Toe Choice boards includes video, imagery and text
By Product: Students have the opportunity to present their findings in different ways
Tic Tac Toe Board provides options that cater to: Visual, Interpersonal, Linguistic, Logical and Spacial learning.
