References used to make this Unit Plan
Harcourt. (2010) North American Geography.
This is the textbook used in 5th grade classrooms in Prince William County. It gives a great overview of each unit as well as many extension ideas and resources for this unit. Many questions and definitions were acquired from this book, but I did not rely on it fully in order to vary each lesson.
Curriculum Framework: North American Geography. (2010) Prince William County.
The curriculum framework for this Unit not only gave me the SOLs, but it also helped me focus in on which parts of the unit were crucial to spend more time on, as well as how to link other skills for learning the material such as different maps, graphic organizers and research skills. Overarching themes and questions were included as well, giving each lesson a whole lesson objective, as well as specific objectives within lesson.
Burke, K. (2009). How to assess authentic learning (5th ed.). Thousand Oaks, CA: Corwin Press.
This was a great resource to use for differentiation assessment and gave a variety of products used to assess as well as ways to assess within the lesson. It helped me even out my tictactoe board as well as other choice-group work to make sure the workload was fair, challenging to the students but easily assessable.
Maps. How Stuff Works. maps.howstuffworks.com
These examples and interactive thematic and geographical maps are integrated throughout lessons 1 and 2, which were used as preassessment, instructional and supplementary materials within the lesson.
Public Broadcasting Services
PBS.com had an incredible amount of pictures, video, primary and secondary sources and lesson plan ideas for the Midwest, the Dust Bowl and other important people and events in Midwestern history.
